"Did you hear a scream?"

In the salon, Graham looked up from his book on Egyptology.

Sharp worry pricked Thomas. "Jasmine," he breathed. "I left her on the upper deck."

Wasting no words, he sprang up and dashed for the stairs. He ran up to the second deck, peering about for Jasmine. He scanned everywhere. No sight of her. Dread filled him as he glanced at the river. He called her name, his heart beating frantically.

"Help me!" The cry came from below.

He ran to the railing and peered down. Blood froze in his veins as he spotted a figure wildly thrashing about in the water. Jasmine. And her damnable heavy English clothing was pulling her down.

"She can't swim!" her uncle roared behind him.

"Hold on, Jas, I'm coming," Thomas yelled, tearing off his jacket and waistcoat and kicking off his shoes.

He grabbed a nearby life ring and vaulted over the railing. Warm water embraced him. He swam in strong strokes toward her. Thomas reached her and grabbed her about the waist. She coughed, clinging to him as he fastened her hands to the life ring.

"I've got you," he gasped, as his powerful kicks kept them both afloat. "Calm now, Jas, I've got you. Can you kick off your shoes?"

"T-trying," she said through chattering teeth.

"Hang on to the life ring and kick your legs in the water, it'll keep you up."

A sputtering cough answered him, but she did as he directed. Relief filled him as the boat's engines churned to a halt and the steam whistle blew. Men appeared like magic on the deck, pointing and shouting.

With powerful strokes of his legs, he kept them afloat as he fumbled for the waistband of her skirts.

"W-what are you doing?" she gasped.

"Getting rid of this damn skirt. It's weighing you down." But his fingers were clumsy as he fumbled with the fastening.

"I—I'll d-do it," she stammered. Jasmine reached around, undid her skirt and struggled to get it off. She wriggled free.

Keeping an arm about on her waist, Thomas began swimming in sidestrokes toward the boat. He grimly concentrated on the lights like a beacon cutting the inky blackness. He was still yards away when a terrified shout from the boat turned his blood into ice.

"Crocodile!"
